Sylvan Robb certified mediator

Sylvan is a Senior Consultant with Information Insights. She specializes in survey design, statistical analysis, and qualitative analysis with a special interest in child welfare, substance abuse, and health issues. She recently attended a 40 hour mediation training and is now a certified mediator. She is now able to structure and facilitate the mediation process, communicate effectively in a highly emotional or toxic atmosphere, help parties present issues, concerns and proposals in ways get results, avoid or move beyond an impasse, structure sound, realistic, and mutually acceptable settlements, and manage power issues. Adrienna Holden awarded 2010 Inclusive Practice Award

Adrienna Holden received the 2010 Inclusive Practice Award for the state of Alaska from the Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education. Adrienna works as a teacher at Peterson Elementary School in Kodiak, AK. She is the daughter of Senior Consultant, Brenda Holden, and sister of new Information Insights Consultant Jessica Holden. Tom Hewitt on Fairbanks Focus Alaska View

Tom is one one of the panelists on the second half of the this week’s Fairbanks Focus. Besides working at Information Insights, Tom is also the editor or the UAF SunStar, the campus paper. He’s a busy guy. Other Information Insights connections to the show include the student producer/director (Eric Lonn, son of Ellen Ganley and Rick Lonn) and the guy in charge of it all, Charles Fedullo, husband of Information Insights senior consultant, Shannon McCarthy.

This week, Lynne Snifka interviews UAF Snedden Chair and longtime journalist David Offer on the state of journalism today. In addition to Tom, the panel includes Jason Gazewood and Dermot Cole. who discuss the mayoral runoff, Bethel loosening its alcohol restrictions, and Stars and Strikes for the week. Dewey Hoffman to intern with Doyon, Limited on cultural resources project

Former Information Insights intern, Dewey Hoffman plans to work as an intern this summer at Denali National Park with Doyon’s cultural resource department. Dewey will assist professor James Kari with an ongoing Athabascan language place mapping project that Kari.

Deborah Hewitt awarded for top-notch shooting

Information Insights employee Deborah Hewitt placed high throughout the five day, Pacific International Trapshooting Association Alaska State shoot, held June 10th-14th. She took High Lady in eight of the nine events, including championship events.

Out of over 90 shooters, Deborah placed in the top 15 overall, and took High Overall Lady for the entire shoot, and High All Around Lady, for just the championship events. She plans to keep up the good shooting, and continue to shoot well next month at the Amateur Trapshooting Association Alaska State shoot at Birchwood near Anchorage.

It’s decided: Brian Rogers named to permanent position as UAF chancellor

UAF President Mark Hamilton made the decision earlier today to officially appoint Brian Rogers to a permanent position as chancellor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Brian co-founded, and was a Principal Consultant at Information Insights until his appointment as interim UAF chancellor in 2008.

Maia Peirce to start at Stanford University this fall

Information Insights intern Maia Peirce has been accepted as a freshman at Stanford University. Maia will start at Stanford this fall. While she is looking forward to exploring a variety of fields, at this point she thinks she will major in one of the biological sciences and minor in creative writing. Maia has worked as an intern at Information Insights since age 14, doing website development and maintenance for a variety of non-profit organizations and small businesses, and assisting Information Insights’ senior consultants with research, writing and editing. Maia was valedictorian of her senior class at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks. Good luck, Maia!

Graduates of the Class of 2009

Information Insights is proud to announce the graduation of Maia Peirce and Deborah Hewitt from Lathrop High school and Matt Klaich from West Valley High school. Maia and Deborah have both worked at Information Insights as high school interns. Maia is the daughter of Information Insights senior consultant Jana Perice. Matt is the son of project coordinator Nancy Lowe.

Maia is valedictorian of her class at Lathrop, and will attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. Deborah and Matt plan to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks this fall. The staff at Information Insights congratulate all our high school graduates this year and wish them the best of luck in their new adventures.

Joan Kane’s poetry included in Words and Pictures exhibit

Former Information Insights’ staffer Joan Kane was featured in an article in the Life section of this Sunday’s Anchorage Daily News. The article reviews the Words and Pictures exhibit that opens this week at Anchorage’s MTS gallery. One of Joan’s poems is included in the exhibit.

Joan is an emerging Alaska poet whose work has recently also been included in the anthology, Crosscurrents North: Alaskans on the Environment by University of Alaska Press, alongside such Alaska writing luminaries as John Haines and Nick Jans. In the ADN article, Joan talks about how strong images and “the sonics of a poem” are important to her work. You can hear that for yourself in her poem “Due North,” which Joan read recently on KSKA. She says, “I enjoy writing poems that provide another way of entering what can be perceived as a flat landscape.” Joan wrote “Due North” in anticipation of returning to Alaska after five years of exile in New York City.

Joan is an Inupiaq Eskimo with family from King Island and Mary’s Igloo. Joan holds degrees from Harvard College and Columbia University. Read more of Joan’s work at joankanewriting.com.
